I don't carry much in the way of cash, and recently I had accumulated £500, in my back pocket, so I decided to try to bank most of it, using the local Post Office. Young girl behind counter, I gave her £400, she counted it, booked it in, I swiped my TSB card in their reader, typed in the pin - DECLINED. The girl thought, maybe too large an amount in cash, and so tried again with £200 - again DECLINED appeared on the screen. I'm pretty certain \i got the pin correct, but what might the DECLINED mean?

Post it to me and i will sort it out for you my friend...

Was it a proper post office or one of those in a shop?
Some banks aren't supported at these smaller franchise type places.
My bank card works at a proper post office but not the shop ones.

Really. You should go find a proper bank. Just less stressful. Less fussing about ect

The day our nat west shut the woman tried to get me out the queue and use the machine . I said no im quite happy to wait .
But it will be easier and quicker for you
i then said and that is why you are out of a job and shutting today .
No its not she replied
i just shook my head
Used the branch in the next town today first time in 2 years as i was over there to put my big pile of loose change into the coin counter.

This happened in my town. Ironically I now use the post office counter and pay in similar amounts to the OP.

Usually in pound coins. But they don’t mind.

The squeeze on cash has started though…

And you wonder why they close the branches!
yeah because i used my own branch every week im not travelling 7 mile to use one in another town .
so what i have done is use my existing nationwide account and opened additional accounts with them
which has got increasingly busy since the natwest and barclays shut in town with thousands joining it as many older people want face to face assistance and nationwide have g`teed they are not shutting any branches if any till at least 2028

In general it's us, the masses, who are to blame for premises closures. Increasingly, people bank and shop online. I remember seeing tv clips along these lines a few years back

Oh it's such a shame Woolworth's is closing, I have happy memories of going in there with my mum!
And when did you last shop there?
Ah well ...

Yes it can be asserted banks are more of an essential service, however if footfall significantly drops then what you gonna do.

Yes it's sh1te for folk, usually the elderly, who then end up with a problem if they don't use computers and the nearest branch is x miles away, however we're never going back to having banks here there and everywhere.
