Politics

Thanks for the information. So, how can I educate myself in this field? How can I grasp a modicum knowledge of the UK political system which then would enable myself to learn more in depth.

I'm honestly not sure. It depends on how little you know. How long have you lived in the UK. Do you know what MPs do. Have you heard of the main national political parties; Labour, Conservative, Lib Dems and Reform. Do you know what the Prime Minister does.

Bottom line is that absolutely none of our political parties are telling the truth about much. Too many politicians are career politicians with little or no experience of how the majority of us live.

There is little transparancy on how our taxes are spent

And our first past the post electoral system needs changing to PR

Hello everyone, coming across this forum to post a thread on the electric forum, I’ve seen a lot of political discussions here, and I know nothing about politics.

Could someone educate me about the UK political system, how it works and what is currently going on. and what exactly are meant by the common terms, I.e, right and left wing.

Thank you in advance.

Just read any of the GD threads and join the confusion

You and I, know I don’t know what those terms mean (hence the description of the first post) - could you explain them?

It sounds like you need a lot more guidance than I can give. There is probably a useful introductory book on Amazon.

Join the confusion in what way?
People think personal self interest equals what is good for the country as a whole. Using the forum, any forum, won’t give an objective overview.
Will that answer what I said in post one?
Politics for dummies is probably a good introduction to the constitutional framework, political parties, and history of British politics. But the internet and wiki is just as good a source of info if used with care. Other than that politics, as Harold Wilson said, is the art of the possible i.e. the exercise of power

Try this from amazon, it explains the nature of British politics in an easy to understand format. Ignore the title its just a series of books the treat difficult subjects.

@TAMD8389 I asked my wife who studied politics at Uni as part of her adult education and she suggested an updated book by Bill Jones with the title British Politics: The basics. It's not exactly a low-cost book, but then most books aimed at Uni students are usually expensive.

You should contact/PM knowlegeable posters such as Notch7, John D, Denso13 and noseall. They are lovely chaps who will be happy to help you I think.

They may be lovely chaps, but all the posters you have mentioned seem to be from one side of the argument. To counterbalance, it might be a good idea for the OP to also ask people like motorbiking, fillyboy and lirefighter.
