Drill press upgrade

Hello

I have a drill press, works great except I broke the original Chuck. I have replaced it with a cheap Chuck, but it’s about 50% bigger than the one that was on there before.

So, my question, as I now have a smaller drill press, would it be possible to get a new column that is a bit longer than the original that came with the drill press?

Not a chance. That is a cheap, Chinese drill press, only intended for very light duty. There is little you can do, to make them stronger.

If, and it's a really big if. you can find a piece of steel tube of the right od then of course you can make it taller, and if the tube is heavier gauge tyan the original that will also make it stronger.

If you really do have a need for a bigger/stronger unit, look through items for sale in the Exchange & Mart and other such papers. I have a comprehensively fitted out large workshop with everything bought at bargain prices over the years from others either needing the space or businesses closing down sales. Also, auctions can throw up some excellent low-cost bargains

I have one, they are not really worth putting an effort into trying to improve them. The chuck drive shaft runs in a sloppy plain bush, the adjustable height plate is so weak, it bends if you try to apply to much force - so even if you replace the post, it will only improve it a little. Adding adjustable timber blocks, under the plate, helps a lot. For what they are, and what they cost, if are not working to a high precision, and don't push the drill bit too hard, they are OK.

The most annoying thing about the drill press with the much larger Chuck, I only need an extra 3 inches to resume what I normally use it for.

Would a Jacobs Chuck require a key from Jacobs or did I break it using a key that may not of been a jacobs. (The place I got the drill press from didn’t know if it was a jacobs key). Seeming the store had a key that came with the drill press but gave me 3 other Chuck keys. These extra keys didn’t fit the Chuck.

Most probably. My wife has many publications delivered, or rather did do until the local newsagent closed down.

Everything has closed and with the internet, there are too many ways to find and buy/sell from top players who have the money and the audience.

Sadly with the rise of china, there is a decline of British and major Europe economies selling out to china, who now make 90% of tools and more you don’t get the quality that you used to get from old machines.

This is a huge reason why I would love to get the tools my grandfather left me, extremely high end machines, but I bet parts are not an issue now days.

Via pictures (I am unable to visual images in my head aka a minds eye, it’s called Aphantasia if interested), but I know there is a huge impact wrench, that from what I have been told, it was used to take tracks off military vehicles (tanks), but maybe told that as I was very young and military proud of loved ones. I even had my own 1815 captain uniform (for a 2 nearly 3 year old) and had a few other red coat uniforms for another few years made for me.

My grandfather died about 5 weeks after I turned 3 years old, my Nan died a few years later, and my father and his brother had fallen out, and still don’t speak to this day, and I am unable to get access to my stuff.
