And hence SDLT is payable @ 5%

Yep I had no qualms paying it . It is what it is5 % is the normal stamp duty charge, then a further 5 % is added for a 2nd home
FWIW I think that’s fair, especially at a time when the country needs more tax revenues

Other posters have pointed out that it seems to be an extra 5% now. I missed the increase. It seems to have happened last October.
