Switch wire not labelled.

As said, a volt stick, is certainly my go to/my first line diagnostic tool. If you know, and understand their limitations, they are invaluable - you can certainly rely upon one to test for live, what you cannot safely do, is rely on one to prove dead.

I regularly use one for finding breaks in flexible cables, and to confirm there is both a live and neutral available in a flex, plus some sort of earth, in a three core - you can follow the individual wires, in the flex, from the outside.
Yep all of that with a LED screwdriver

unoffically Harry , yes I do take your point, yet some folks are unaware and they will try something risky.

Sounds like a plan - even electricians get asked to fix things with no notice, and they don't have their own tools and testers with them.

Really. A competent spark turning up to do a job without tools or testers?

They aren’t a spark then

If I were to use my fingers to count how many times that's happened to me I'd run out of toes too. One single friend of Mrs Sunray had no idea there was 2way switching on her stairs as the top switch was broken and being different to all the others thought it was for the long gone immersion heater. Being in a multilevel complex the property was upside down with bedrooms & bathroom downstairs. My first visit there on a Sunday found me buying a s**t screwdriver from a corner shop and then a switch.
