They said (BBC) we, and animals, have been doing it around 21 million years - now, how could they possibly know that? They also don't know why we, and animals do it - but do it, they do....

It's pretty straightforward. The 7 minute story does a great job of explaining it.

Thanks, and I agree - just guessing. That's a longer version, of the brief version I saw.
How did you not understand it? They found a load of species with a shared trait and traced back to the most recent common ancestor. It's not that hard to grasp.
