I want to remove a double socket and fit a blank plate in its place. Since we may decide that we want to replace the socket sometime in the future, what is the best way to make the cables safe in the interim period?

Any point in fitting a blanking plate as same thickness and size?

To answer
Fit double wago connectors

The Ls must be connected together,
the Ns must be connected together and
the Es must be connected together.

Any suitable connector may be used. The Es can go in the back box E terminal.

You should have two lives. Two neutrals as its a ring.
Could be a spur socket with just 3 wires I guess.
To answer your question, yes....
I would just buy some double wago and use one hole in each

Yes. The socket is never used but for some reason intrigues a very young visitor's prying hands.

You might want to consider these as an alternative. £1 for a pack of 5 from The Range... Other suppliers are available ;)

A good way to prevent young children from playing with plug sockets, this Pack of Five Safety Socket Covers protect from fingers getting caught and causing injury. With five included in the packet, these covers are perfect for covering up prominent sockets around your home

They would be an easier way to bring the socket back into use too.

if you are covering with a blanking plate then its still accessable then you could just use some 30A connector strips - available from toolstation and screwfix for under £1

Personally
the plug inserts maybe ok if covering up the socket so children CANNOT reach - but a lot of research says these things are dangererous , i removed all mine and stopped using
google them and see reports from various sources including which

I wonders how long it would be before someone posted this

F*** no. All those things do is turn sockets into a game, and provide an easy way for kids to defeat the very good built in protection gate that seals off the live terminal

Simply turn that thing upside down and push it into the earth pin hole to open up the live, then let a child stick a finger/small metallic object in

Anyone considering use of those things needs a reality check

I wonder why they are still so readily available and selling then has not been banned in the UK
No one has championed the cause hard enough

And people are thick/don't know how sockets work

I have repeatedly demonstrated to a local churchs officials how easily these ****ing things cause problems by partially inserting the earth pin upside down then giving it a thump which typically pushes it right in and snaps off. Each time they go round and dispose of them but within a few months they get replaced.
