Hi

M looking to replace my door electric strike and I’m not sure if existing is ac or dc. It says 8-12v on it but when I google the model it’s available in both versions.

My multi meter on ac side seems to only have a 600 or 200 setting, and it doesn’t read anything (other than a minus appears). But then the dc side produces the same result when placed at 20!

I’m not good with electrics and feel this I a v basic q to ask.

Why do you want to replace it? What's the fault with it?

Do you see +/- symbols on it? If you do, then that is an indication that it works with DC power.

Sounds like you're testing it out of the blue. Is the button being pressed while your testing it?

It could be ac, or dc, suiting both. Test it on both, if it works, it works.

I replaced the lock, which has a longer throw than the old strike can manage.

Attaching a pic, but no, can’t see + or - on the strike.

Yip, testing it when the release is pressed. However see update below.

Ok, I’ve re-tested, this time removing cover so to get better connection with multimeter probes.

When set to 200 on the AC side, I get a reading of 4.3v

When set to 20 on the DC side, I get a read v of 2.4v.

Now… I replaced the old audio intercom with a video unit & camera doorbell about 4 mths ago. I can’t recall looking too closely as to whether the wiring to the strike in the new system operated at 12 or 24v. From the DC reading above, it suggests it was at 24v?

Hmmm. How long are the wires? Assuming that you're measuring correctly, that suggests that there may be long wires and a significant voltage drop, and you're lucky that the solenoid works at all. Try measuring at the other end of the wires?

Post picture of new lock you have fitted ….not sure why you would need to replace the release ? You can get a deep jaw version of some lock releases
