? I think we all 'missed something' - provided, that is, that the new required socket is horizontally aligned with, and on the same wall as, the point where the cable comes through the wall. There then wouldn't even need to be a box/blank plate whereit came through.

What's under the hall floor?
If it's a void, as it's so low down why not drill from the new socket position downwards at a steep angle to come out under the floor
or chase down the wall and drill through lower down

3rd idea if the cable has jus bee tucked between the solid floor and the wall
Knock out a hole around floor level to below then drill down into it, this way you can protect your 50mm on the hall side. replacing the skirting will cover the damage. Obviousely all of my ideas will render the box sizes hole redundant.
Thanks for all your great suggestions. I can't risk drilling towards the hall floor void from the dining room as is a lot of pipework under the floor there, including a gas pipe!
