I'm looking at installing an engine hoist in my workshop while the roofs being done. The ceiling joists are 2x8 c24 4.1m clear span between the walls. I was going to double 1 up and install a steel plate bolted every 300mm in-between them to form a finch beam. I've been told by a couple of friends this is overkill but I'd rather get it right now while I've got access to install it, rather than the headache of trying to retrofit it after the roofs on

Are you planning to actually use it to fit engines? If so, the trouble with a static hoist is that you have to move the vehicle back and forth etc. As above, a moveable folding engine hoist is a much better option.

Would you not be better off with a U beam style steel beam, whereby the lifting tackle can roll along the beam?

I assume the beam would have to go front to back as opposed to side to side plus you’d need a sliding block and tackle. I’m guessing buying and installing that lot would cost more than a dedicated portable engine hoist. You can pick them up, secondhand, for well under a hundred quid.

Well 2 joists without a steel plate can lift a 500kg load but the deflection would be 15mm which is 3mm larger than allowed on a 4.1m span

I've been looking of market place and eBay and you can hire one for under £100 but they cost over a £1000 2nd hand. I'd prefer to have my own as I'm using it a fair bit for engines and other heavy stuff loading etc.

You’re having a laugh!

I sold my one, practically hardly used, for £80.
