BoschSeries 2 KGN27NLEAG fridge freezer - 2 years old.

A couple of days ago I thought I had closed the fridge door properly but an annoying plastic container (I didn't feel any resistance) just kept it unsealed hence the fridge was running at 15 degrees next morning. Having closed the door I thought it wouldn't be long before it stabilised again. It didn't, it was stuck at 15. The next step was to reset the unit by powering off for 30 mins which initially started to show promise, getting it down to 5 degrees. But next morning it was up to 10 degrees. The food in the freezer is still frozen solid, so why did it go down and then up again ? Surely it should have recovered. I can't do a full defrost as we will lose all the food which is an expense we can't afford and don't have a spare freezer.

Any clues as to what could be wrong ? I could turn the temp dial to the very lowest setting but it is almost there now.

Not the same fridge but covers common problems.
I think yours uses a single pump and the cold is taken from the freezer part.

A full defrost would be the first thing I would do. It is possible to empty the freezer insulate all the items with old blankets or similar and defrost the appliance fully with a hair dryer in a couple of hours.

Thanks. I did think about a hairdryer but all the advice online from fridge manufacturers advise against it.

Because the freezer is still working normally, the compressor is probably fine. Since the issue started after the door was left open, ice may have formed around the evaporator or airflow vents, preventing enough cold air from reaching the fridge compartment. The brief improvement after switching it off supports this theory. Check that the fan is running and the vents are clear, but if the temperature doesn't recover, a full defrost may be needed before considering a repair.

I am defrosting it now but can only afford an hour as meat stored in spare fridge won't keep over 2 hours (1 hour needed for fridge freezer to get back to cold temp) If a repair is needed it might cost more than the unit itself if Bosch have to be called.

Sounds like leaving the door open resulted in ice behind the rear panel. See the above.

I have used temperature controlled heat gun in the past- from memory, I went for 150 degrees centigrade. Absent of the heat gun, yeah, I would use a hairdryer.

I just checked the temp gauge in the empty fridge after turning back on for 2 hours and it was at 10 degrees. 15 mins later it was around 6. Then a few mins after that it was 10. Checked the freezer temp after a few mins and at -18 degrees. Just checked the fridge and still 10 after turning the dial to coldest setting.

Well, I can't fathom it. After another hour it has risen to 12 degrees on the coldest setting. This is so frustrating as I can't face having to defrost it all again. Such a hassle when I have only a portable electric cool box to fall back on

With my old Hotpoint, I was using it to brew beer in, the fridge would not cool until the freezer was down to temperature. I had it plugged into one of these

to keep the beer at 19ºC measuring beer temperature not air so sometimes it would take freezers down to around 5ºC air temperature, but it did not cool the fridge at all, so had a second controller in the fridge compartment making sure beer at 22ºC, and it all worked fine until I moved house, and left it behind, but as said fridge would not even start cooling until freezer around -15ºC.

Now I just have to stop brewing in the summer.

It is very common for ice to build up in the ducts hidden in the back to such an extent that they are blocked. I have only seen it happen in "frost free" fridge freezers where there is a fan to blow the cold air.

Once they are blocked, it takes a long time to melt out and drain away. If you only give it a short period you have wasted your time. You have to take out all the food, double wrap it, tightly pack it in a cardboard box inside another box and wrapped in a duvet, and leave the FF unplugged, with both doors open, until water has stopped dripping out into the cabinet and also into the collecting dish at the back. Pull the appliance away from the wall so you can see it and sponge it out. It will probably take 24 hours. If you have some expensive fish or meat that you can't cook and eat, ask a neighbour to store it overnight.

It is sometimes possible to remove the back panel but it may be cemented into place by a block of ice.

A fan heater may overheat and damage the plastic parts but you can use a room fan to blow warm room air into the compartment.

It's not practical to pull out as kitchen space is small and floor is wood. Surely just turning it off and leaving it overnight with a fan pointing inside the door will be enough? We don't have any option to put in neighbours, only a electric cool box.

The dish round the back is adequate for normal use, but may overflow if you have a lot of ice. I like to see it and sponge it out ( it may be very dirty)

When empty, the FF will be quite light. Clean the floor and spray it with furniture polish to help it slide.

Pack your expensive meat and fish in the middle of the box, surrounded by frozen peas, chips and pizzas, which you can eat later, or throw away if necessary at low cost. A large, double cardboard box wrapped in a duvet offers quite good insulation.
