I love this when I have to explain my jokes. Its much funnier than the joke its self.
For Mrs Motties birthday we went up town to see 'Titanique the musical' at the Criterion theatre. Very funny, very entertaining and a bit near the mark in places. After that, I took Mrs Mottie to a completely gluten free restaurant. Very nice bit of grub and you couldn’t tell it was completely gluten free …..until you got the bill. Feck me, they know how to charge the gluten intolerant coeliacs. She enjoyed it though. Place was packed and Mrs Mottie even got a little treat from the chef. Surprisingly, they didn’t charge for that!
I spoke too early! Flushed the chain this morning and got the noise. I had to go out and check that they hadn’t fitted another faulty meter.Sorted. Well, almost. Engineer came out, tested water pressure (4 bar) and witnessed the noise. He took the meter out, gave it a shake and said they shouldn’t rattle like that. He didn’t have a new meter onboard so he fitted a flow cap so we’ve got free water until another meter can be fitted. He took a photo of the reading and asked me to do the same in case there’s any dispute about usage later on. He said I could fill up my swimming pool and everyone else’s but I mustn’t use a hose.
Great service from Essex and Suffolk water. 10/10 from me.
They hadn’t!
After I cleared the noise by turning the water on and off again, I went inside and turned the tap on and (slowly) off several times. No noise. Turned it on and (quickly) off and the noise was back.
Once it has started, turning taps on indoors makes no difference so it’s not as if there’s a tiny leak after the street stopcock and anyway, yesterday there was no movement on the meter when it was turned on or off. Could it be the actual stop cock in the street. Getting really annoying now, I can hear it all the time.
Any ideas?

I can get the noise to start by turning any tap off quickly. I’ve only heard it start in the mornings - perhaps water pressure is higher in the area then as not everyone is up and using water?
When I did the kitchen up last year, I fitted a new lever style stopcock however, the kitchen will need partially removing to get at it so I’m hoping is not that. No ball cock in the loft as we had all that removed when we had our hot water converted to unvented.
Fecking thing is worse than ever now.

Ive found that the a particular tap that starts the noise can just be a trigger.I can get the noise to start by turning any tap off quickly. I’ve only heard it start in the mornings - perhaps water pressure is higher in the area then as not everyone is up and using water?

Before the meter was removed, yesterday I had to literally go outside to check that someone was not using a hammer drill to drill a hole in the side of my house, it was that loud! With the meter removed, it just sounds like Mrs Mottie is using a hoover upstairs. It’s a hundred times worse when you listen to the stop cock in the street though.

Been keeping my mouth shut as best I can when a lady engineer from the water board was telling me that the hours of screeching from their street stopcock was caused by my pipework 'water hammering' (or two pipes rubbing together) when no water was being used. When she (reluctantly) replaced the non return valve in the street stopcock and fitted a new meter, the 'water hammer' stopped. She couldn’t explain that except for saying that it will return. I hope she is wrong about that!
