As I have two sides to my garage roof can I have two sets of 800 watt panels and put them on timers so when sun goes to my south westerly side one set turns off and the otherset turns on.
Not required, as one inverter can have two inputs. And as long as it is unplugged once every 28 days, then not installed, as far as G98 goes. You are allowed 28 days to notify, so unplugging and plugging back in resets the timer.
In real terms unless you have a smart meter, there is very little possibility of the DNO knowing you have plug in solar. Battery pack solar still has solar panels, and there has never been anything to stop it. So existence of solar panels tells them nothing.
Basic five types of meter:-
1) With export it runs backwards.
2) With export it adds it to the import.
3) With export it flashes a red LED to show fault, but does not record what is exported.
4) It has two registers and cycles between import and export.
5) It is assigned two MPAN numbers records both import and export and transmits the information to suppliers. The payment for export does not need to come from the same supplier as the import.
6) Two completely independent meters one for import and one for export, both of the type shown in 3).
The two-meter method was stopped late 2022 or early 2023, unless you already have them fitted, only official way to be paid for export is 5) the so-called "Smart" meter. But those with 1) type will also get paid until the supplier realises your bill is far too small.
With 2 x 1000 watt panels into an 800 watt inverter, one should get 800 watt for most of the day, when not raining, it would be like me having a 2.4 kW inverter, so I looked at yesterday

the black line is where the inverter would be at maxium, so yesterday a 2.4 kW inverter would not have lost me that much solar, and at the moment my 6 kW array is producing 109 watts (09:48) which is why I have batteries charged with off-peak.
That is also what I would say, only those who already have solar, would likely gain from the grossly overpriced kits.
