Hi,

Whilst trying to find the return pipe to fit a magnaclean, I have been looking at the oil boiler and have some questions:

1, There are 4 pipes coming out. It would appear the middle 2 are for gravity feeding the hot water tank. Then outer 2 have the pump on one side and a thermometer wire in the other for the rads. Am I right?

2, I replaced a broken pump a while back. It seems to be on the return side pumping into the burner. Have I put it in the wrong way round?

3, I've searched on the net for a brochure showing the internal workings. I can only find one where I must register for £30 . Is this normal?:

Many thanks,

Chris.

1. The tappings are top and bottom left and right! Yes if you have gravity primaries it is piped this way!
The thermostat phials you refer to control the burner!

2. It is not unusual to have the pump on the heating return!
IF it is on the return it obviously needs to pump towards the boiler !!

3.The boiler has no internal workings except a set of baffle plates which are prone to burn away and drop causing flame impingement !!

Hi,

"The tappings are top and bottom left and right."

Sorry - but what!. Guessing it means pipes go in top and bottom both sides.

So basically, ignoring the oil burner/thermostat bits, its a baffle plated tank of water with 2 in and 2 out pipes, yes? The right sided 2 get hotter first so they are the out pipes, so the pump is with the gravity return pipe on the left. There's no internal valves etc?

many thanks
Chris

The pump is on the heating return, The heating flow will be on the same side at the top.
The gravity return has no pump hence "gravity"
It makes no difference which side is used for heating or water !!
Yes its just a combustion chamber surrounded by a water jacket!!

Hi,

Sorry for you stupid questions, but its my first time. Got it now.

Thanks,

hi i have one of these boilers in what sounds like exactly the same system setup.
i was just wondering we where thinking of changing our boiler to a worcester boiler. does anyone have any idea which boiler we should choose as we really favour a worcester. also would the pipe connections be the same with flows at the top each side and returns and the bottom each side

i doubt it i would guess a conversion to a fully pumped system would be required to comply with current building regs

i have also come across one of these boiler systems...looks the same as above but on the hot water side...the cylinder had to be changed so the plumber changed the cylinder and when it was refilled the hot water from the boiler is not circulating around the cylinder!!! being gravity fed this can only be air??? or sludge maybe???
