Having a visit from the Local Electricity Company.

you order the 100A DP isolator and its enclosure separately. they are not expensive.

If the enclosure is more tha two modules wide, be sure to get enough blanking pieces to avoid having any finger gaps in the front.

This MEM one has a cunning hatch enabling you to get access to the Load side terminals without exposing the Supply side.

Thanks for that John. I will get my lad onto the case. His company has got an account at CEF in Hull, so I should be able to get what I want pretty cheap.

So, to summarise,

I'm gonna buy a 12W Split Load CU; (prolly MK)
The MCB's I need;(are the ones in the existing CU OK or are they different)
100A DP Isolator + Housing;
2X1M of 25mm Meter Tails + 16mm Earth Wire;
Earth Block;
2W Garage CU with RCD;

Thanks again for this guys.

I can't imagine they would have any problems connecting up a new isolator while they have the power off, I would use a seperate bare metal earth block and put the isolator in a 2 module box with holes made in appropriate places for the tails to come out. Then leave the new tails and single earth hanging ready for them to connect.

MK used to be very good for CUs but seem to have gone downhill to capture more low-price buyers. The MCBs have changed design and the ones you have may not be quite the same as latest (if you can see a part no. someone will know).

MEM is one of the best brands and you may find you can get some RCBOs to fit at a reasonable price if you ask around :wink:

The design of MK RCBOs has remained unchanged from the style the OP has. It is just their MCBs which now seem to be built to a price.

I still like their CUs, but the MCBs (and plate switches) really do let them down. :x

Merlin Gerin are still identicle to old style MK :wink:

Hi again guys, just been talking to a YEDL guy who said that there is still a bit of a backlog on their work but it's not severe. He said the timescale for work like this from phone call to work being done is on average about 6 weeks atm, so not too bad.
Anyway, I digress :) I've been searching the electrics posts & just want to clarify something if you lads can confirm for me :-

Can I do my own work by following the procedure of notifying the local Building Control, i.e. that I want to fit a new 12-Way Split Load CU ?

What I was planning on doing, after talking further to the YEDL guy is to disconnect all my cabling from the old CU & transferring them to the new one , preparing some meter tails from an Isolator & a new earth Wire from an Earth Block for the fitter to connect into the meter, then when he has c/o the Cut Out, connecting new tails from the Isolator to the new CU.

After the YEDL guy saw what I needed re: the Meter move from one wall to the other ( about 2' across the gas cupboard ) and that there was also plenty of slack on the feed cable to complete the move, he suggested that most of the contractors that do this work would prolly move the board for me as a homer, as long as they haven't got to prat about with any of the wiring on my side of the Isolator.

Does this sound like a possibility ?

*BUMP*
Anybody ? I don't want to go and buy a load of gear only to find out that I'm wasting my time.
Thanks
