HARD HATS IN SUMMER

i work for a major tarmac firm and there health and safety mad [not always a bad thing] but wearing a hard hat on a hot day and shoveling 160degree tarmac makes you sweat the moment you take your hat off then on you preaching the rules its alright for them they sit in an office all day thinking up new rules i know my safety is important but theres no give in the rules there. Thats my moan out the way any feed back from anybody

cover your hard hat in foil etc. so it reflects the heat?

Try wearing a Cooldanna (google it)?

Create a custom hardhat with a safari roof?

Or you could buy some flexable icebox coolers and stuff them between the shell and inner frame of your hard hat or even attach a solar powered fan to the peak (get one of these http://www.professorpower.co.uk/show.asp?id=62&cat_id=32 and install on hard hat)?

I sympathise they are a pita.

But the way it works - if you were unfortunate enough to have a serious accident and won damages, the damages would be reduced because you had not cared for your own safety, the reduction is 50% I believe.

Last job I had where we had to wear a hard hats in the blistering sun, we took to stuffing them with paper towels and filling them with water. Gave us some relief for a while.

My hard hat has a sweat band type thing built into the front of it, which keeps the plastic from actually touching your head, and also absorbs sweat to stop it running into your eyes.

It's not going to help massively, but might be a bit better.

Hard hat rule although right in some industries is a bloody joke in others . know i guy who walked off a greenfield site no machinery or anything that could hit him.
Boss came up and said get your hat on or your off the job, followed by where are YOU going . Home was his answer.
We used to fit meters in new houses no scaffolding or anyone working close by. Site agent would come up and say hats on or off site . Ok see ya later. But i have people moving in today /tomorrow . Not my problem i would say, funnily enough i always fitted the meter with no hat on.

Rule used to be PPE was only to be worn when necessary and todays risk assessments should decide on whether PPE is necessary or not.

One major factor with PPE is it must be comfortable to wear in use and not become a distraction due to the person wearing it becoming uncomfortable in its use thereof.

Health and safety has gone nuts. A mate who works for a national scaffolding company was beside his van 150 yards away from building doing a drawing of the set up for safety document. Wee girl of a saftey officer asks him to put gloves on as all scaffolders must wear gloves on site.
And how am i meant to draw and write with those on he asks. well you will have leave site and do it elsewhere she says. And how am i meant to see it to draw it.
Finish up he had to write a whole new risk assesment out so he could draw from a safe distance with no gloves on. mental

With most things, it would perhaps have more effect if it was applied in a pragmatic and reasoned manner, rather than being a sledgehammer to crack a nut - and we currently have this blame culture, with no personal sense of responsibility. It's just spawned whole legions of brain-dead muppets who enforce all this garbage.

Personally, I hate getting rigged up in PPE just to go on site. I never needed it before and I don't need any of it now.
