is it appropriate to give the police ever increasing powers to hold suspects for up to six weeks without charge ,or are our civil liberties being eroded

Do you have cause for concern or are you worried about the do gooders and bleedin hearts, will say.

Would you prefer to see them in custody for 6 weeks or risk a few thousands commuters on a train for example. How about a couple of bus loads of kids blasted to bits in Oxford street or another Lockabie.

Ok so it should be limited to certain types of crime and or investigation if it isn't.

F**k 'em, they shouldn't give the police reason to arrest them in the first instance.

But they may have been arrested without reason, & they need the time to investigate.

But I do agree with you.

My own view is that this length of time (to hold suspects) is fairly worrying in respect of the liberty of our citizens but, also, my view is that we are living through some strange times, and these times, equally, or, more worrying, inevitably, bring about some necessary and uncomfortable decisions by our legislators. No doubt our politicians will watch the situation closely and, if this extension of a suspects detention does reduce or, hopefully, eliminate the actions of murderous thugs, then it is acceptable. However, if innocent citizens are harried, and arrested, on the basis of carelessly handled evidence or, held in custody because of appearance or ethnic origin, then our legislators must be made to reconsider this latest erosion of a citizens rights.[/u]

Get tough on crime

How are the Police expected to do that when they're weighted down with red tape, paperwork and one hand tied behind their back.

Its about time you realised that Human rights, do gooders and bleedin hearts doesn't work.

In my opinion Prevention is better than Crime, so whatever it takes, sending all the illegals back where they came from on the first boat would be a good start.

Let's face it, those who they want to hang onto for an extended period of time will, in the vast majority of cases, if not all, have given plod some indication of the necessity to do so. It's hardly likely to affect your average speeding, mobile-using or litter-dropping miscreant.

Wonder what Brown's sell-out to the DUP was to get it through, though...

As mentioned the 42 day detention will affect very few and the powers that be will be selective of who they use it on (especially the first time  )

If it stops a major terrorist strike I am all for it.

If the suspects are brown, black, white, blue or green it matters little to me, the overall concern should be the well being of the peace keeping, law abiding majority.

If it proves that they have been holding an innocent peron then that person will be compensated at the rate of £3000 per day! That's DOUBLE what shytalk earns! Lock me up for £3K per week and I promise I won't complain.

Its all wrong, and we should all have resisted this and any further ill considered terrorism law.

What we should all be aware of is that these laws are not just about terrorism, but are used to erode our civil liberties generally.

Remember that old guy who got arrested/ejected from the Labour conference a few years ago for heckling? Terrorism laws were used for this.

What about the local councils using laws designed to fight terrorism to spy on parents choosing a school for their kids, old guys leving rubbish out for collection, or people parking their cars?

It is a very bad day for us, and one more step closer to a Police state and unaccountable/unelected bods governing the poplulation.

...£3000 per day! That's DOUBLE what shytalk earns...
Erm, four times actually (more on a bad day, less on a goodun).

Anyhow, Guiseppe, seeing as you are so hung up on what I may or may not earn, may I just point out that that is my charge-out rate, not what I take out of the biz as income.

Yeh, that's as may be, but this is one thing that won't ever affect the vast majority of us. The other stuff does and was there and being used in unintended ways, regardless of this latest development.
