Not bragging (well I am actually) but I can get 'em tidier than that even. Draw around box with pencil then with new stanley blade cut through the plaster, inside the line. Drill then chisel out a teeny weeny bit undersize at the front, then tap box in and screw to wall. Use quick drying cement...

Actually you're right, and not just about boilers. I was watching some daytime prog recently, can't remember the name, where people had started jobs and then found out the job was way beyond them. Some of the things clueless people had had a go at were just mind bogglingly dumb. Loft...
