Hi all,

My old string-pull bathroom light above the mirror broke recently which I replaced after testing new bulbs etc. However, the new light does not work either despite me following the wiring instrctions to the letter.

The lights are both double insulated so no earth wire coming out of the wall and just the two wires to hook up, a red and a black which I have connected to the blue and the brown in the light fitting. (red to brown & blue to black)

Can anyone suggest what is going wrong please?

Is this a light fitting with a pull switch as part of it?

If yes, then it is likely there is no power to the fitting. Where does the other end of the 2 core cable connect? Is there another switch or fuse nearby?

Thanks flameport, it is a string pull light fitting.

The wiring disappears behing the tiling into the wall and there are no other switches nearby. Even the main ceiling light has the switch outside of the bathroom in the hallway. I thought it maybe a power issue but the previous light had power so could something have broken the cable when the old light broke?

Also, is there anyway of trailing the light cable to it's source without removing the tiles?

Thanks for your help and swift reply

Do you have a known working light, or something that you can attach to the wires.

You'll then know if its the wiring, or the fitting.

Of course, it would be better to use a multimeter, or other mains test indicator (NOT a neon scredriver).

I don't unfortunately, I do have the neon screwdriver but guess that is useless. How much will a basic multimeter cost me please Taylortwocities and are they fairly general things?

Thanks for your help
