I am an animal lover (cats), and can only go on my own experiences of what I see - dogs being taken on walks, my brother's dog, other family and friend's dogs etc. All animals seem well cared for and loved, but all fall (and always have) into the categories alluded to.

why would you say yours brothers/family dog is idiotic ? in what way is it.

cats are selfish, lodgers..... dogs are loyal, life-long friends...

A burglar broke into a house one night.
He shined his flashlight around,
looking for valuables when a voice in the dark said,

pet owners of all types are the same you insult my animal you insult me. unreasonable to any argument. pets of all type smell you walk into house as a non pet owner and its like being hit in the face with something offensive.
tell the owner it stinks in here they get uppity. as a breed pet owners are blinkered and cannot understand why you as a non pet owner do not think their pet is so wonderful. my pet loves me, no they dont you feed them that soppy look on their face means feed me.
at some point we will probably get a dog but until that time I will continue to believe that pet owners have had their brains sucked out of their ears.

Well Deano. There you have it. A typical 5 page thread (so far). Three or four posts that may be useful to you, and dozens of inane drivel from those with too much time on their hands. All saying the usual things.

If you want a cat, dog or an elephant, just get it, and enjoy it. Ignore the bitter, sad cases on here who have a downer on everything.

Did anyone tell you I don't like kids. Many of them grow up to be delinquent.........................................blah, blah, blah

Especially kids from single parent immigrant families

N.B. keep the smells down by not having carPETS on the floor, make one room a no go area for pets, we got 3 dogs and 3 cats, in the kitchen we have carandeen or something, the other rooms in the house have a non slip animal friendly laminate, also invest in a few plug in air freshners, jobs a good un.
and yes they are all rescue animals.

If you want advice on insurance, etc without all the Meldrews putting their two penneth in, try Googling 'cat forum'. They will be pleased to help you, and all posts are likely to be useful.

What self respecting irresponsible cat owner wouldn't be happy, letting their pet fire their backsides over a neighbours fence to crap on their lawn then let it back in.
