I think it's much more complicated than that, and in times simple. I know one bloke, ex copper, who didn't even understand what he was voting. He didn't think leave meant just that and yet he voted leave, plonker. Lies, yes there were lies, but on BOTH sides of the campaign. Tbh, the whole thing was run so badly on both sides - don't you think Cameron could've done a better job? I do, but instead he relaxed because he didn't think he would lose.

There are many who voted for less than fine reasons. I spoke to one guy on the day who voted leave because his mate voted remain, and wanted to have something to argue in the pub about. What a waste of a vote!

Why do we have to have less students, less scientists, less research? Do you think that the UK will stop foreign students? Why?

Because research today is very collaborative. EU institutions can exchange research personnel easily, and this has greatly enhanced our standing. We are also quids in, as we get a great deal of cash from Europe for research. This will end, and it will be harder to get those scientists once Brexit starts. Over 85% of scientists are for remain, and this is the primary reason (although not the only reason). While universities get a lot of non-EU students for study, it is the EU that has that collaboration that gives us a much better research base. It has actually upped our game, as the diversity on projects has pushed our UK scientists to perform better.

That research has a knock on effect in the economy, as we can make money in the long term from these things.

We had an increase of racial attacks and yet those are almost back to normal levels, so we're getting there - not to mention the more recent, excellent advancement in policing of hate crime, encouraging victims to come forward, more awareness being made. Should those facts also be considered in those figures?

Possibly, but the fact remains that the whole affair has dredged up divisions in society. Something that many referendums do.

And our economy has taken a hit but to think it wouldn't would be madness. It's a period of uncertainty for sure, will take some years to sort it out but what's the alternative than to get there? Is it the end of the world? Are we all going to live in poverty? I think very much that life will continue for most as it already has. One door closes, another opens and there's some very smart people out there.

Predictions look pessimistic.
The alternative is to not go there. I can't see it happening, but it would be better for the country.

Or - as one door closes, another one shuts.

Yes we do, but the problem is that the EU also has the power to over ride them. And whilst we'll lose initially, we'll gain more in the long run.

And whilst there are many in the EU that will happily cut of their noses for the fun of it, at the end of the day, research scientists will find a way of exchanging research simply because it'll be in everyone's interest to do so. It'll just be the bosses secretaries that have to jump through the bureaucratic hoops to get whatever permits are needed.

The really annoying thing, is that you'll look back at this in ten years, and be glad that you were wrong, but we have to put up with the doomsayers till then

Apart from the fact that we'll still be following EU law if we want to trade with them.

Even in matters where we don't have to follow EU law, we will probably still follow their lead. Eg. Today I noticed that Norway & Switzerland banned incandescent bulbs around the same time as the EU. They probably didn't have to, in order to trade with the EU, but still did it. In the big scheme of things, there is little that the UK has disagreed upon with the EU when it comes to new laws, and yet we are throwing out our say in the implementation of areas where we do have issues. And screwing our economy in the process.
