Can you explain this?

If lockdowns were cancelled wouldn't the health service just buckle? That would still result in people with health issues not receiving the help they need?

the 500k or so if we did nothing

Their is no evidence to suggest 500k would be dead now if we had did nothing.
How ever many experts are saying lock down or no lock down the numbers will be the same.
Eventually.

And when economies are decimated, "War" sticks up its ugly head.
Source? Has Greece gone to war since their economy crashed? Has Zimbabwe been busy invading their neighbours? I'm struggling to think of any wars that have kicked off because the economy was suffering. You might be able to claim it for WW2, but that's a massive over simplification m

Yes there is, no there isn't.

Just out of interest, how many people on here have either...

1. Been tested positive for the virus?
2. Know someone who has been tested positive for the virus?
3. Know someone who has been hospitalised or died from the virus?
Personally none, but know people have lost loved ones, my next door neighbour lost her 60 year old friend (a woman). I also know people who work in the NHS who have witnessed what this disease can do and heard first hand from them :(

You have civil wars happening when countries economies crash.
World economies crashing is another dimension.

No 'might be' about it...

And since we are about to enter a period of economic collapse not seen since the decade preceding WWII, then all bets are off!

but know people have lost loved ones,

My Aunt died a few weeks ago with cancer.
She had no contact and a very late diagnosis with the medical profession in the months preceding her death.

The hidden death toll?

Or maybe it's more convenient to add the 'virus tag' whether or not it's the actual cause of death?

That's not just the UK btw!

Urm.. am sorry you lost your Auntie Ryler, and am sad she had no help..
but was the question about covid deaths?

Probably not, because you can't compare the 50,000 or so deaths with the preventive measures we have taken with the 500k or so if we did nothing. We'll, obviously you can compare them one is awful, the other is ten times as awful.
That's a very good point.

The forecast of 500k deaths was clearly wrong.

When people say the UK should have done what Sweden has done, the reply is Sweden is not doing very well.
Well, Sweden has more cases per million (7,959:4,474) but fewer deaths per million (568:680) so actually not doing that badly.

So, without lockdown, why would the UK have ten times as many deaths?

The UK has the second highest deaths p/m (after Belgium) so something has gone wrong whichever way you look at it.
Maybe they have attributed too many to covid but that just leaves the question of what are the rest?

The number of cases per million is skewed according to the testing regime.
For instance, if anyone can be tested, fewer positives might be the result.
Whereas if only those with symptoms are tested, the positive results are likely to be higher.
