    Mechanical or Pneumatic Cistern?

Hi, I'm speccing out a new bathroom for the loft conversion. Found a toilet the missus likes, Ideal Standard Back to Wall Aquablade Pan (E050901) and now I need to get a concealed cistern for it. The cisterns comes in either mechanical or pneumatic flavours. As long as the flush button is...

    Bathroom extractor fans with humidistats

So basically it sounds like humidistats can be problematic so either trigger the fan with the light or trigger it manually with a cord-pull. I think I may opt for the light and then at night we can switch a mirror light on if we're only using the toilet.

    Bathroom extractor fans with humidistats

An isolator will be fitted outside the bathroom door. I was just hoping for a smarter way to activate the fan rather than just whenever the light is on. Since we have a window in the bathroom, we won't even need the light on most mornings when using the shower!

    Bathroom extractor fans with humidistats

Hi, We're in the middle of a loft build and need to make certain decisions during the 1st fix to help things later on. Our current bathroom had an extractor fan wired to the lights which came on with the lights. This could be annoying as we only really need the extractor fan while we are...

Replacing cast iron waste with plastic

Thanks all. Builder is wary of disturbing the join with the clay pipe in the ground so we’ve decided to remove it from the bend at 1st floor level and then replace with plastic up to the loft level.

What’s the point of shower trays with 4 upstands?

I’m looking for a shower tray for my bathroom, 1000 x 800 with 2 upstands but can only find trays with 0 or 4 upstands. My understanding is that you tile over the upstands for additional protection against leaks. My tray will be against 2 walls so the additional upstands are redundant and may...

Replacing cast iron waste with plastic

Hi, I'm having a loft conversion done and I'm considering replacing the cast iron waste pipe while the scaffolding is up as this will allow it to be taken down from the top which should make the weight more manageable. The cast iron waste is only connected to a single toilet currently and then...

Replacing tiles around bay windows with external insulation

Hi, I live in a 1934 semi-detached house with bay windows (5 windows per bay). The 1st floor bay wall is single-skinned, presumably to reduce the weight on the window opening below. Below is a photo of a similar property from the internet. Unfortunately I have pebble-dashing rather than bare...

    Wood primer & undercoat

Not hand any reply to this but have decided to go with Zinsser B-I-N Shellac Primer/Sealer. Any recommendations for an undercoat and wood filler for the joins?

    Wood primer & undercoat

Hi All, I'm after advice on decorating the window boards for my living room bay window. I will acknowledge now that had I known earlier what I know now, I would have opted to just remove and replace them with some MDF boards. I didn't think I had the requisite carpentry skills and was trying...

    Insurance while work in progress

He has public liability insurance but that won't cover me if we get another Storm Eunice and the roof gets blown off will it?

    Insurance while work in progress

I phoned our buildings insurer to notify them that we're intending to have builders on site for a loft conversion. They've added some endorsements to our policy. 1 - increased the excess by £100 2 - Theft & damage is only covered if force or violence used. 3 - No storm damage cover for the...

I need to strip some window boards back to wood

I have some window boards which have had decades of paint build up. I've previously tried a light sanding and applied zinsser 1-2-3 primer/sealer (waterbased) but defects have come through. I gave it a sand with my random orbital with 40-grit but it's slow going. I tried some no-nonsense...

    Triple glazed pitched roof windows

Hi, We're are in the early stages of a loft conversion. Finalising quotes and one of the decisions is over whether to get triple-glazed roof windows. The fact that we're in the midst of an energy crisis, roofs are considered to be a major route of heat loss and we live in a 1930s house with...

    in-line bathroom extractor fan

The current joists are in-line I believe but the new floor would use joists resting in the webbing of steels so would run at 90° I believe. Even if they were in-line there would still be the problem of locating the fan itself ☹️

    in-line bathroom extractor fan

Hi, I currently have an in-line extractor fan located in the roof-space above my bathroom. I'm considering a loft conversion. Does this mean that I need to drill a hole in the wall of the bathroom to replace the in-line extractor? Thanks

    Cement mixer

Any tips on cleaning a cement mixer? Do I just hose it down when done?

    Cement mixer

I'm after a cement mixer and wanted some advice on what to look for as I'm a complete novice. The reason I want one is I have a lot of garden works which as a DIYer who has to consult the internet and YouTube, it would not be economical for me to hire one. I have 2 small walls i would like to...
