Hello,

I've just joined, as I've noticed this site to be a pretty good resource to ask the following...

I'm paying £16+ per day on my Gas central heating. I have a condensing boiler and a BEM5000 Weather condition installed and running.

Despite this, the heating of the house is still only just hovering around a decent room temp of around 20C. In this current weather it still seems cold indoors.

Is this normal? Have I got a problem? The house has 5 Bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 3 livings rooms and 2 studies. I've turned off a few of the radiators in rooms we don't use much in the hope to bring this down.

It's looking likely I'll be facing a very big bill at the end of the month.

Can any help recommend some cost saving measures?

To note: I've recently applied to move from BG to OVO, commencing Feb 15th at £219/month DD.

Thanks for any replies in advance.

Hello,

I'm paying £16+ per day on my Gas central heating.

The house has 5 Bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, 3 livings rooms and 2 studies.

Its a big house and Im surprised you're not paying more. One of my customers had a gas direct debit changed to around £500/ month. That said, I think their combined income was around £200,000/year and with big houses you get big bills.

Can you retreat to 2 bedrooms,1 bathroom, 1 living room and give up the studies? Turn the stats in those rooms down to 10 degrees.

If you ever get the chance, insulate between floors, in the walls, in fact everywhere possible. Masking tape over window frames etc. Have a big house in chiswick and we've doen this during renovations over the last couple of years - really is snug all over now.

I don't, but I didn't know this would be considered normal. Thanks

Sadly, we don't have that kind of combined income, really struggling with this.
Frustratingly, some of the radiators are linked together, turning one off, turns others off with it. Also, we don't have "stats" in each room to control temp, only one Thermostat in the hallway.
Thanks

Funnily enough, I'm in Chiswick too! :)

Masking tape over window frames sounds like an idea I can put into practice.
I assume there is room for saving in doing this?
Thanks

I'll have to check, which is it.

Yes, taken daily readings, and multiplying by the BG rate given to us.

I'll get back to you on exact figures, if this help.

You need to be careful in calculating your own usage, as the units your meter measures in are not necessarily the same units that you're billed in!

As some of the rads are on a 'single pipe' system, putting TRV's on any would only work in one room, once the TRV shuts, all the rads on that pipe start cooling too

I think everyone is in the same boat at the moment. With this exceptional cold snap, all heating systems are flat out. The latest news regarding the highest gas consumption for a 24hr period is just about to be broken. Lets hope we don't fall out with the Ruskies :D

In my experience, it's best not to look at the meter spinning round, watch Eastenders instead, far more depressing :D

I've read it twice, but I don't see your Meter Readings to show the actual usage. The amount you pay is not the most important bit of info.

What was your average cu metres/day usage for Oct, Nov, Dec?

Anything that reduces draughts - am assuming you have timber frames by the way.

My house (well my parents' anyway) is one of those facing acton green down the hill from chiswick park station.
