2 stroke starting problem

H

holmslaw

I have a stihl chainsaw that has become difficult to start. The pull cord used to have a smooth action, but now it has become very jerky and almost impossible to pull. It will start and run eventually so its not seized.

Any ideas, thanks

Might just need a service. Has it ever had one?
Stihl's are supposed to be pretty easy to maintain, you might wanna take the cover off yourself and see what's going on.

Thanks Deluks,

Whats a service. :D No never had one, just clean the air filter and replace the spark plug. Bought it after the big storm and it gets regular use.

Just googled 'uk big storm', blimey it was 22 years ago.

Yeh, just thought I'd ask before I start poking around.

Also, I forgot to mention this happened suddenly. Using it last weekend must have stopped and restarted at least 12 times without a problem, then the pull start went jerky.

could be the clutch, or may be some debris in the mechanism. mine managed to get some wire wrapped around it i didnt know about and caused a similar thing

Thanks for the comments.

The saw is now running smooth as silk and the jerkiness is back to normal, ie just a firm resistance.

I cleaned the spark plug and air filter. Then I discovered a very fine metal mesh filter on the exhaust outlet. It was 90% clogged up with black soot, cleaned it all off and - vroom vroom.

Thanks again :D
