This may sound like a daft question, but will 6 LV (240V) 50W downlights cost more to run than 6 ELV (12V) 50W downlights?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: not in terms of power consumption, I don’t know about the difference in bulb life and bulb costs?

The answer you didn’t ask for: if your thinking about costs then your looking at the wrong lights, 300W of power is a lot to use to light a room even if it’s a big room that needs that much light you can get just as much light with a lot less power from CFL’s. there are CFL’s that fit in downlighters but the one I have seen stick out, you may now be able to get downlighters designed for CFL’s but personally I am not a fan of downlighters for the many reasons I listed in the wiki

They will cost pretty much the same to run (the transformers are not 100% efficient though and there will be some losses).
However, assuming they are tungsten halogen then 12V ones will give you more light.

12V halogens also seem to last a lot longer, though that is probably because of the soft start on electronic transformers.
