Hey folks, just new here so be gentle :)

Decided to replace the switches today and everything was going well. Until I got to the old classic 2G 2Way, 1G 2Way combo.

Now is where I need the help. It doesnt wanna work :(

One side of the 2G is easy as its wired up to control a 1 way light in the middle of the stairs so we can forget that as I managed to wire that up faultlessly.

The other side of the 2G (This switches on the light at the top of the stairs) I have managed to make work ok. However when I get to the 1G switch I cant make it turn on the light at the top of the stairs. Tried moving the wires round every way I can think so there must be a deeper problem here than I can see.

Some images below to show you the current wiring as it stands. Its the right hand side (looking at the image) that is causing concern.

Not a very good picture of the 2 gang switch. We can't tell which wire emerges from which cable.

Take another picture which shows us this.

Is the 2 gang switch fed by one circuit, or two? If you're not sure, how many lighting circuits at the consumer unit?

That 2 gang switch has an earth terminal; so it needs earthing.

Upstairs lighting is controlled by one switch at the consumer unit. The 1G switch at the bottom of the stairs ic controlled by this same switch at the consumer unit.

Bottom one is not a dimmer unit.

slightly different angle on the 2G 2Way switch

I was thinking wouldnt it have made sense for both the middle and top light to be controlled of the same switch? Otherwise whats the point of the middle light?!

Picture still doesn't show which wires emerge from which cables.

That wiring may be correct, but until you can confirm the above by a picture or description we are guessing.

It could of course be a faulty switch. They look a bit cheap. And one's got Homebase stamped on it. You could try fitting the old switches to test. I imagine trying the 1 gang switch first would be easier.

It looks as though your strappers on the 1G 2way are the wrong way around.
The yellow is okay = Com in both.
But your blue should be in L2 (2way on the switch)
and your red should be in L1 (1way on the switch).

Does the two way light work when the one way switch is positioned in both the open and closed positions?
Also try swap blue and red around on one gang switch.

LAP Switches (used this brand for every other room in the house with no issues)

The Homebase one is the old switch and its getting removed but its worked fine for years. I left it on till I got the upstairs one working ok.

This a better angle?

earth is getting connected as youre reading this in case you're wondering.

Right, swapped the red/blue around on the 1G and now the following is happening

With the 1G in the off position .... the 2G works perfectly

With the 1G in the on position .... the light doesnt come on at all.

You have your permanently live in the wrong spot then.
On the two gang, swap the reds over on the one way(com&L1) but keep the red link across both gangs(com&L1) in the same spot.
See what happens.

okay, now the middle light - the 1G on the two way stays on permanently

the 1G switch downstairs only works when the 2way is switched on..

And you have kept the short link (red) in the same terminals across both gangs?
If so that tells me the permanent live is at the two way switch.

But does not seem to function correctly

Do you have a voltage tester?

Put back the two swapped reds and remove the red link altogether.
See which light works.

Do you have a voltage tester?I do but no idea how to use the damn thing haha

Put back the two swapped reds and remove the red link altogether.
See which light works.done this and get the pattern below

2G 2Way

The one way switch doesnt work at all

The 2 way one only works when the 1G downstairs is in the off position
