A new desktop computer.

I don't know what to do to be honest. I'm not that familiar with the kit to decide. I've got to go on what others (like you) advise.

Any machine for £200 will have way more power than you need for what you do. Processing power has become so cheap, it is not like the old days where a computer becomes 'out of date' after a few years.

Anything more is an extra.

An SSD hard drive will result in fast boot times, and slightly faster loading times (though you won't notice this if you don't play games).

4gb memory is all you need, sure get more if you have the cash, but if you are on a budget stick to what you need.

Windows 7 is best, but if you go shop bought you are tied into what windows licenses they have.

Win 9 is being missed as some countries consider the number nine is unlucky. Norway, Korea and Japan.

That's not quite what I'd read, afak it was to ensure that there was no confusion between Windows 95/98 especially in regards to potential coding issues:

"Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9")) { /* 95 and 98 */ } else {

and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.
"

As for a new desktop what 'AronSearle' said, theres no need to go nuts if you're not gaming.

I use http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/pcs/ for all my gear (used to build my own but margins are tight enough that's its worth getting PCS to build for me instead, plus the quality is excellent), if you're confident follow that link and just select what you need, their bare bones system will be more than enough but you may want to add a little more ram/larger hard drive/graphics card, a £500 budget will get you quite a really decent machine.

Of all the pc's featured in links in this thread so far, the best chip performance is the i5, followed by the i3. The slowest is the Celeron-chipped PC.

What about AMD? They were good years ago.

Yeah. But I think now Intel beat them.

I don't mind being corrected if I'm wrong.
