After all they have been searching for an aids vaccine for years?

And still don't have one

Blimey Armagedon could be upon us

It might, it might not. Given there's a vaccine for Sars-1, it's probable there'll be one for Sars-2. No one knows if it'll be a once-a-year job like the flu vaccine, or a once/twice a lifetime like measles.

The HIV comparison is pretty poor, Sars-1 is, for obvious reasons, a better comparison.

No. Nobody really knows what's going on. We don't know whose death figures to believe, and how many people died "of" or "with" Covid 19. We don't know how these numbers compare with the deaths from seasonal flu in other years. We hear of young, healthy people dying from it, but young, healthy people died before Covid 19. We hear of the doctors and nurses dying from it - but do we know how many doctors and nurses die as a result of their work in "normal" times?

I was reliably informed the genetic difference between the original strain of Cov-2 and now are minor which is promising for a longer lasting vaccine.

We know enough. Most of them are 'of' deaths, a lot of that particular confusion is because people don't understand what 'underlying conditions' mean.

The number of dead thanks to Covid-19 reported so far is an underestimate. Potentially only half the total (based on 50% of Covid-19 deaths in France being in care homes).

We also know enough to know that at the beginning of April, when it was only getting started in the UK, it was already killing far more than the worst flu seasons do at their peak.

The underlying conditions doesn't help much either - many people live for many years with all sorts of underlying conditions at all sorts of ages and also all sorts of levels of fitness. Ventilation is said to be intrusive - odd term but I suspect most could figure out what it actually means. Nothing to do with having a pipe in ones' windpipe.

I reckon one of the underlying conditions is "vulnerable to SARS-Cov-2".
Or, to put it another way, "bad luck".

And no, I'm not being flippant, I'm being pessimistic / fatalistic (n)

an expert (I was gonna say virologist, but wasn't sure spelling) says they have identified 8 types of coronavirus.

apparently SARS1 virus further down in the respiratory tract -which meant people weren't infectious until symptomatic, unfortunately if you had it you were far more likely to die.

this SARS2 virus sits higher up, so means people shed virus when symptomatic but morbidity is less.

thank goodness we havent had a virus that is both very infectious and has an extremely high death rate

You've hit the nail as to why CoV-1 was easier to eradicate, whereas Cov-2 sits higher up returning in sputum etc and spreads to people who show no external symptoms ie asymptomatic. Its the perfect evolution to Cov-1, how convenient.

What I find odd is that any number of scientists are adamant that the virus did not come from a Wuhan bio lab, but that no scientist actually does know (or will say) where it actually did come from.

Indeed imagine the ******* child of corona and ebola or something like HIV Then proper panic would be in order. I'm not in anyway down playing the losses anyone has had to covid.

Indeed, you see Trump and his guys have insinuated they know of the source but keeping it tight lipped for now :) of course that could mean anything.

Presumably it doesn't show any of the signs of deliberate modification, such as CRISPR. S

Scientists are as a rule, cautious people. They don't like saying where something came from unless they can prove it. There's plenty of theories but it's not as if the virus has a royal mail tracking number.

Generally that means he has no idea. Trump isn't a patient person, if he knows something he shares it then and there. Any time he says things like 'wait and see' then you know you shouldn't and you won't.
