We could do with a bit more information, what function are the existing wires performing? Are they switch wires? Are you sure those colours are correct? What sort of lamp are you wanting to add?
Sorry guys, I will ecplain better , I am putting a light in the understairs cupboard and need a power source, the garage is next door so I plan to tap into the lighting from here by installinga new junction box.
However the cable in the garage is 4 core red black yellow and earth, I assumed the one to ignore was the yellow, but it would seem that this is wrong , can you help ?.
Has the garage got two way switching beacuse the cable you describe sounds like the switch feed and strappers for two way switching and won't be much use as there will be no neutral. Why not try taking a live neutral and earth from a permanent lighting supply in the garage through to the new switch for the under cupboard and then from there up to the new light. Another option is to use a switch fused unit from the power circuit to supply the new light
