best way to apply grass seed

Hi,

I've had a lot of trenching dug in the garden. I have to reseed the total area and there's too much to cover with netting or similar.

Grass seed seems to need light to germinate. Does this mean that I have to scatter the seeds directly on top of the ground, leaving them exposed to birds and mice, etc? Or can I rake the seeds in slightly, giving a bit of protection?

Any other advice would be welcome
