Hello All,

The desktop for the kids to use (or me when they've pillaged my laptop) has just gone on the wonk.

It went blank, power to the base and fans hdd lights but the screen didnt work.

I turned it on and now I get a double beep followed by 8 fast beeps.

Ive looked this up in the manual and it point to a graphic memory fault.

I have replace the Card with another but still no joy.

Any ideas what I could do or is it curtains.....

Thanks in advance

Rob

ECS motherboards of that vintage were notorious for having poor quality capacitors - I'm amazed its still alive.
Check the big cylindrical capacitors on the mobo, especially the ones between the CPU socket and the rear of the board for any that look swollen or are leaking brown goop. If they arent your problem, they probably soon will be.

If you fancy your hand with a soldering iron you might be able to get replacement caps from Maplin, RS Components or CPC/Farnell, but in all honesty you're better off replacing it with something more modern.
