hi could someone tell me if the 12v halogen bulbs cost as much to run as ordinary bulbs? can one get energysaving halogen bulbs? thanks .

It depends.

A single 50W halogen downlighter will cost less than a 60W 'normal lightbulb', and more than an 11W low energy downlighter.


Wattage is the key.


To get the desired lighting levels in a room, a standard 60W lamp is often replaced by lots of 50W downlighters.

This will often use upto 400W which will cost more to run.

Depends which type. Osram IRC (similar to Philips Masterline ES) work by reflecting infra-red light back onto the filament so it gets hotter. This means it can produce more light for the same current (or better still uses less current to produce the same light).

I have tested the Osram IRC and IMHO the 35W lamp is brighter than the 50W conventional Osram halogen.

N.B. This technology is ONLY available for ELV lamps.
