Ceiling rose problem

if you haven't got a glow on any cable in this light it is probably a red in a previous fitting which isnt connected

I'll give that a go and let you know, thanks for the help so far.

Ahaaa!

So I know where the problem lies, just need advice on how to proceed.

The kitchen has three sets of cables (Red/back) with only two connected (reds in loop, blue/black to brown/black). One set isn't connected to anything. Where do I connect this spare too?

why are they not connected? were they ever connected? if you have just left them out by mistake, then, red with other reds and black with blacks and blue (neutral) of kitchen light fitting.

They were connected in the past, my mistake in not connecting up again..

I have now and there is current, I'm using a dimmer switch to this light and now I''ve connected all up, the dimmer controls the previous light which wasn't fully connected. not the one I'm trying to get working.

Getting close I feel, thanks for your help so far.

can really understand what you are saying what have you got working? whats not working now? are all lights connected as per our previous posts?

Sorry, that was slightly unclear.

Two rooms - living room, kitchen. Living room was the one giving me the problem we've been discussing. kitchen was the one with the unattached wires.

I attached the cables in the kitchen as per your advice and was recieving current in the living room ceiling wires. I'm using a dimmer switch in the living room too. I've now attached the light in the living room and the dimmer also, however when I use the dimmer rather than work in the living room it dims the kitchen. the kitchen switch also works, in the kitchen.

I've got red into L1 and black into C on the dimmer.

what cables have you got in the living room coming out of the ceiling again and how hav you connected them at the moment

just worked it out if you have connected living room light as per my previous post (both reds together one black to neutral one black to live of your light fitting) then the problem is in the kitchen light fitting two of the black cables need to be swapped over reply and i will tell you how to identify which one.

They are connected as you suggested in the living room.

How do I identify the kitchen one to swap?

Three pairs of red/black and blue/brown from light fixture. + earth.

power off. right three reds together. split three blacks make sure light switch is off in living room. power on then get some one to switch the kitchen wall switch on and off so you know which black is glowing when switch is on. power off. this black goes to the brown live of the kitchen light fitting. the other two blacks go to the neutral of the kitchen light fitting. power on all ok.

yes but does one go when kitchen light switch off. you probably have an induced glow, if you can touch the earth cables you will have a better path and see which is the kitchen switch wire
