Hi,

I've bought a new pendant and it's going to replace a bog standard ceiling rose. When I've opened up the rose I'm a bit stumped because as much as I can figure out there's an extra wire that I can't quite figure out.

There's nothing in the loop section so I'm assuming this is connected elsewhere which is fine, but there's an extra neutral which I don't know what I would do with.

I am a novice so this might be something normal, but it's got me stumped.

Regarding the new pendant, it's connector is one of the block kind with 4 terminals on each side (1 live, 1 neutral, 1 earth and 1 spare). Would it be okay to put the two neutrals attached together on the spare and the remaining 3 wires in their respective terminals?

Any help would be appreciated. I've attached a photo of the existing wiring so you can see what I'm on about.

Cheers

Maybe the loop in loop out of the line supply is elsewhere, perhaps a junction box or the switch itself, and the pair of black sheathed neutrals were for some reason fitted at the ceiling rose.

Blup

It connects to the other neutrals. Just as it does already.

No.
Taking a working arrangement and changing it will result in something not working properly or at all.

You may well find a little more about the odd arrangement when you take it apart, but make sure you mark everything carefully. If you google a description of how to wire a ceiling rose, you'll see how it should be done, but in your case, it's completely the wrong way round, and they are all black wires, and no reds. The wire with the red tape should be the switched live, but as long as you make sure that all the wires go in to the block in the same way as they are, then you should be okay.

When you take the rose off the ceiling, you'll probably find more exciting discoveries stuffed up in the ceiling void.

As above. Just connect it up again as it is, 3 black conductors in the N terminal, the black with a red tape in live.
Change anything and you'll be living in the dark and learning how to use a test meter.

I tried the FAQ but most of the images seems to be down so that didn't help much. I'd looked at diagrams before but there didn't seem to be any standard wiring which had three neutrals which was the main part of my question. But as someone said, just put the neutrals in the neutral, the switched live in the live and earth in earth, which I did and it worked, but I'm still non the wiser what's up in the cieling void. Oh well.

No. Those old sticky posts are pointless.

You'll have to ask Blup why he pointed you at them instead of the Wiki.

And you'll have to ask the site admin why they've not taken them down. I've lost count of for how long and how many times I've asked them but they take no notice of me because I despise the Mods and they despise me.
