Child poverty

In 2005-6 3.8m children were in poverty - in homes on less than 60% of average income including housing costs

How on earth do they measure poverty in this country.
OK I know that they say that the 60% equates to around £12k per annum, but do they include in that all the benefits that a family with 3 kids would get.
If thats the case what about the oaps who are on half of that.
Theres poverty and poverty.
As one who was brought up many years ago in an orphanage I knew what real poverty was.

I keep hearing about how people cant afford to work otherwise they'll lose their benefits so it doesn't really figure, I suppose compared to these so called fat cats we are all living in poverty but compared to third world countries were all living the life of Riley

Well said anobium.......but coincidentaly a good friend of mine was in orphanage and I was on the same Cauncil estate ..........and those buggers got better things than us sometimes Guess you can`t substitute a Mum+Dad tho` 1960`s as it happens

God knows why I said that Nige F, because as soon as I had posted it, I regretted what I had done.
There are people who I have known for lots of years and I have never told then that I was brought up in an orphanage.
Guess thats one of the quirks of being on line.
Incidentally my time was a bit before the 60s, it was more the late 40s and early 50s.
In those days it was more like a prison than a home.
Things improved dramatically in the 60s.
