Choosing New Laptop

Thanks chaps. I shall consider these options!

I've seen this at Comet, seems good for the money, but not sure about the KB...

Try one. The keyboard is probably fine, but the off-centre touchpad will drive you insane. I've just equipped my mother with a very similar Lenovo: http://www.ebuyer.com/391215-lenovo-ideapad-g580-laptop-maa45uk

But why is this one "worth" £700??

Wait, what? Packard Bell are still alive? There's your answer..

And this one is exactly the same price as the i3 one above, but i5, 2.5, smaller HDD & smaller RAM.

If you were choosing between these lifebooks, which would you have?

The latter. The i5 is not only an i5 (significantly faster in most cases, plus more graphics features like accelerated encoding and hardware post processing), but it's an Ivy Bridge CPU. Cooler, better battery life.

Is this i3 laptop good for the money? JS are selling exactly the same for £100 more!

Hell no. Medion are cheap Chinatrash sold by a Eurotrash company.

Watch out for glossy screens.

Thanks, Monkeh, I remember the glossy screens warning!

Although, I have read that glossy screens make for better picture quality when watching films?

I guess you would not buy the PB?

The Medion was plucked from a review column, it marked well.

So, despite the offset pad, you would have the i5 Lifebook?

Let's put it this way, for £400, would that be your pick?

Thanks, Monkeh, much appreciated!

I'm sure they do. So long as you don't have one single light source in the room.

They wouldn't know a good laptop if it came around and hit them in the face. And mine wouldn't even be marked by that act of mercy.

Out of those, yep. Take a look at the Lenovo, though. It lacks in specs a little, but they're well built.

I've just nipped out & bought "Computer Shopper" & "P C Advisor".

Computer Shopper has as its best buy (in my price bracket at least) the Lenovo G570 with i5 2450 processor, 6GB, 750 GB. It's listed at £450, but I can't find anyone selling it that cheap.

PCA list the Acer Aspire V3-571 as its best buy, i5 2450 and 6 GB again, with 500 HDD. Listed at £471. Also, I can't find anyone selling it that cheap.

Neither of these best buys is within my price range, anyhow. Do you think the same model numbers but with i3's would be as good (like the one you bought and linked to) ?

I did look at the Lenovo's before but I wasn't sure about the name. However, a rave review from you and the mags is enough, but I just need to choose the best model for my money...

I imagine the i3 would do you just fine.

However, if you're happy with that i5 equipped Fujitsu having looked at it, go for it. It's got good specs, and they make decent enough laptops. I went with the Lenovo because I could net a £50 cashback on it, and I'm familiar with Lenovo.

It should keep my mother happy for a few years (she can finally browse the web without waiting for the screaming, overheating laptop to finish running through javascript). It's a glossy screen, but not as bad as the old one. And it's really hard to find one which isn't glossy at this price level, I spent two days looking for one around £450 a while back for a mate.

The Acer can be had at Amazon for £482 (prices have clearly risen slightly since the review). The G570 with that spec is £430 at Amazon right now.

Phew!

I thought this choosing a laptop malarkey was cut and dried!

While looking at the G570 M51BHUK, I found a G570 4334-9LU at PC World.

It is cheaper, and appears to have an identical spec.

I've tried looking at Lenovo's website to look up the differences, but can't find specific model numbers.

I've even tried ringing their UK HQ, but the phone just rang and rang...

The hell are they doing with 9LUs? Those should be US models.

If you think you'll use the HDD space or RAM (doubtful for most people), then yes, the Argos one is worth the extra money. You've just missed out of £50 cashback on that model, unfortunately.

Shucks! Was that cashback with Argos? I didn't notice that...

As you seem au fait with their model numbers, do you know what differences there are between the 9LU and the M51BHUK?

Not a damn clue. I just know the 9LU is for sale in the US, which means it'll have a different PSU to a UK model.

The cashback is from Lenovo directly: https://lenovo-saving.com/en/summer-saving

Unfortunately, it just ended on all the G580 models.
