What is the best method? I have heard conflicting suggestions.

Hot steam clean
Or
Brick cleaner acid and then jet washed

same reason most people clean their paving... freshen/clean it up.

If moss is your problem Steve, then a paint scraper lashed to a long length of dowel could be the answer......great on concrete tiles but not at all on slate - much to fragile to tamper with.
John :)

Copper sulphate used to be used to keep moss from growing on roofs.
Maybe it is frowned upon these days?

Not much miss to be honest. I am cleaning up/refreshing the house so thought I’d start top to bottom.

Like anything once it’s given a good clean it looks miles better.

I was favouring the hot steam method?

A new roof will look miles better as well.
A new roof will also be some years closer, after you've cleaned the existing one.
