could anyone identify this tree and disease please

this is a large fir owned by my father in law, a real beauty it is too, it has recently acquired a fungus like growth which is working upwards slowly, it is white and sticky, any help is much appreciated

Sounds like Honey fungus. Link below explains. My mother-in law has just had it diagnosed. (In one of her fir trees - not her!)
