My friend is trying to install 50watt ceiling lights, the little halogen ones, and use a dimmer switch to control them.
Found the switch wire and know which is the feed, so appropriately wired the little thins up, using a ceiling rose to test the install as we go.

But the dimmer has blown twice, he is not sure what is wrong. Can you suggest something please.

You have either wired incorrectly, or your dimmer is not rated for the number of halogens you have. Are they mains or low voltage? How many of them are there?. If they are mains, as a guide you need to double the Wattage for the dimmer. So if you have 150W of halogen you will need a 300W dimmer. If they are low voltage, make sure the dimmer is suitable for use with transformers.
