DIY Squirrel deterrer

I've just experimented with the idea in post #5, but to prevent squirrels from scoffing all the food on our bird table. The birds can still peck up the seeds but the squirrels can't get their mouths around them, although they try hard enough.

Rats and squirrels go for my bird and hedgehog food

Margarine or any oil on the pole to the bird feeders keeps them off and the magpies

Both rats and squirrels hate chilli , curry powder, garlic , peppermint and lemon juice so the whole garden gets a blast once a week, twice in the winter

Just put up a sign..'No Squirrels'....they will then go next door.

Please explain, how is the mix, application etc? And how big is your garden?

Few pints of water in a bucket , get some extra hot chilli , curry powder , garlic puree

I would say 4 desert spoons of chilli or curry , good squeeze of garlic , squeeze of jif lemon , squeeze of fairy liquid ......that helps it stick

Good mix

Then just get a soup ladle and liberally spread it around the areas you see squirrels

Obviously the bigger the garden the more you need

And if it's bad weather then twice a week

On the trees in our garden that don't have bird feeders we have feeders for squirrels.

Just because someone built our house in their habitat it doesn't give us the right to exclude them from our garden.

Their habitat is North America

They are an invasive species that almost wiped out our native red squirrel

I am more than happy to spray chilli powder solution around the garden which irritates their eyes and noses and keeps them away from my garden bulbs and the food I leave out for hedgehogs

They are basically pests and need controlling

Look up big cheese squirrel trap on Amazon. Works brilliantly, bait it with biscuit and chunky peanut butter. Then shoot the squirrels, you'll soon notice the population decreasing and they'll stop bothering you

That's me told.

Should I feed the birds? Cat up tree.jpg I have no problems with squirrels, they don't like my cats, but not sure if I should feed the birds, better to feed cats direct, as feathers in the house make an awful mess. If I can reach it to put seed in, cat can also reach it. As to pine martins, I am told they are getting closer, and they will see off the grays, seems reds are too light, and can't reach them.

As to how pine martin and cats get on, not sure.
