Do I need to earth a metal handrail

Hi

We are thinking of putting a metal (stainless steel) handrail on the stairs, the reason I've put this in electrics is because I've got 2 questions:

1. Would I need to earth it?

2. Has anyone had experience of these in a house? I'm worried that becase the hallway and stairs are carpeted that we'll get static shock from it, or am I just being paranoid?

2. Earthing it would actually make this worse.

Just ensure that anybody wearing nylon underwear removes it before using the stairs.
