According to the UN world happiness report the happiest countries in the world are also the most heavily taxed.
No1 was Denmark ,most of the top ten were Northern European states ,the UK wasn't in the top ten,

I suspect that cash in hand makes people even happier.

Commenting for a friend.

fairly pointless connection really
usually satisfaction fairness and other factors as a full picture are what matters rather than one isolated fairly small element in the whole situation :D

I don't think it's paying more tax, it's probably the causes that more tax is being paid. In other words its the organisation and diciplined set up of the country that leads to satisfaction.

If you paid high taxes and essential services were dire, no running water, poor power supply, high crime, the roads were pot holed, no education you wouldn't be very happy.

I have a friend who grew up in Denmark and he goes back to visit fairly often.

It certainly has a different approach, high taxes are a part of it. He said you dont really see people driving around in flash cars. A doctor or Surgeon drives a typical average car and lives in a modest house.

Denmark has wage flexibillity and collective bargaining.

High tax rate of 60% -which is high but not massively so.

As Noseall says, a fair tax system must be important. probably.

Hmm...Denmark... Norway ... Sweden ....Finland. Highest usage of anti-depressants in the world, high suicide rates, high Alcohol and substance abuse rates, but at least the Danes have hygge. Methinks these surveys are suspect to say the least.

If you look at the Gini coefficient and Palma Ratio you will find these countries suffer from less inequality. If there is tax transparency and effective use then I would bet most people would accept the rates they pay.

Scandinavia looks to me about average on suicide rates, but you're right about antidepressants. The UK is right up there on the list too by the looks of this article.

These countries have higher taxes, but they also have good healthcare and a high standard of living.

A slightly different view. That said I have had the privilege of visiting all of the Scandinavian countries, and very nice they are too, if expensive.
