Doorbell wiring

Hi
Im trying to replace my doorbell bit unsure what type I need. Currently it is a round mechanical ringer, mains wired. I took it off the wall & there is only 2 wires coming out of the wall. How is this powered, is there a transformer hidden somewhere? The back of the current bell says 3 - 4 volts in it. I just want a traditional ding dong bell but the one I bought needs mains wires going in then push button wires coming out? What bell should I be looking for?
