Seriously........You can't electrify a gate as a security measure, and anyone giving you advice on how to do so would be in the wrong.

if you want to shock people who touch it you don't want low voltages. you want fairly high voltages in high impedence and short pulses.

to provide theese you want an electric fence unit.

a domestic fence is not normally electrified and neither can it be. Yes cattle fences are but these are temporary and very low voltage, and for agricultural reasons. The only places you are likely to find them is the inner compounds of various dodgy government type places.

right i was wanting to shock people and provide the same level as an electric fence unit, the only people who would open the gate would be myself or unwanted scum

My late father, who had been an electrician for 50 years discussed doing this with a neighbour and was overheard and reported to the police.

He came within a nats of being prosecuted.

Maybe a message for any sparks reading this, 50 years in the game ended up nutty as a fruit cake.

There are plenty of plans on the net for making stun guns/batons. You could make one of these, if you find said yob messing with car, give him a wack with it. I'm sure he wont come back. Oh make sure you are wearing a hoodie etc and he may think its someone from a rival gang.

by doing that you are opening yourself up to criminal and civil action, you wont find any decent electrician that will do it. By the way what happens if the delivery man calls and goes to the gate or aunt maud goes to the agte when your not in to have a look around the back to find you?

it is against the law and you may kill some one, what if a little child innocently touched it?

how ever, dont think you can "get done" for a sign that says it has 30k, but i would seek legal confirmation FIRST

no its not ok. its the same as its illegal to have a guard dog unless you are a commercial premises with a person to control the dog at all times. Firstly under civil law you have a duty of care to protect whoever comes on your premises (even if they are tresspassing) eg covering any holes in the path. Secondly under criminal law its illegal simple as that, if you want chapter and verse i will dig it out for you.
It would not be veiwed as reasonable as the normal household doesnt have and doesnt need it due to the plethera (good word that) of security options avaliable.
