Energy Bills

If you're partial to a conspiracy theory or two (I am not), you could say that prices are being forced up to try and reduce consumption and therefore lessen the adverse effects on the planet.

This huge price rise, it could be argued, is happening because all previous attempts to cut consumption have failed.

That wouldn't be fair, as the least well off would not be able to afford to heat their homes.

A fairer method would be for each property to have an allowance of so many kWh at a low price. Once you exceed the allowance the unit price goes up significantly.

That is an excellent idea.

i can see a return to days long gone bye which actually is already happening. Only room in the house being heated is the lounge. Traditionally via a coal fire with a back boiler so hot water was available as well. Well we have electric kettles now and electric showers. Electric blankets came about eventually as well.

This is how a lot of people lived. Some are already and have been for a while.

Where have you been it's happening especially amongst the retired that stay at home and often feel colder.

I've heard of people that used to spend the day in a libarary I've not been to one for more thn 40 years but advised the are often closed mid week as well now and luch break for up to 2 hours and close early open late.

Someone we know goes to a shopping mall and sits in there

I have one on the bed throughout winter, but only rarely use it - maybe five or six nights in the depth of winter, just to warm the bed through before I get in. It is rated 100w on max pre-heat. I could not sleep with it on, it would be far too hot even on it's lowest setting.

Some people who can't afford to heat the house use a similar sort of blanket while sitting watching the TV or reading.

'Time of Use' tariffs on the way, maybe a modern twist on the old on/off peak?

In other words, do stuff during normal/sociable hours and pay more, do the same things at 2am, pay less. Stating the obvious I know, but as usual these sort of changes have little/no effect on those with cash to burn, pardon the pun. It's the average person/family that'll be inconvenienced or worse.

Yep, the global capitalist model is working just fine ... for the 1% at the top.

I posted this in 2013

A precurser to variable tariffs and personalised billing...

Features can include:
The ability to remotely turn power on or off to a customer, read usage information from a meter, detect a service outage, change the maximum amount of electricity that a customer may demand at any time, detect "unauthorized" use of electricity and remotely shut it off, and remotely change the meter's billing plan from flat-rate to multi-tariff.

Avoid like the plague!
