My daughter is starting school soon, and I have been asked to provide her ethnic background.

When I asked why it matters, they just said government figures blah blah, not actually a proper answer.

So unless someone on here can tell me why it matters, I think I will mark the box "do not wish to provide'.

Just a thought but maybe it is so the school can source any 'non english' literarture they may need so that they dont get accussed of being 'racial' ???
As I said, just a thought.
Or to check so that no teachers mess up when naming class mascots etc

next time you get a form asking you who lives in your house and are they of voting age they want to know the colour of your sh## check it out

They use ethnic groups in the same way health and social care do ... To monitor service provision to ensure that it reflects the needs of their demographic community.

In a truly balanced racial society we would have no such need IMO ... I'd answer "Do Not Wish To Provide" also

Probably doesn't matter...

occasionally these surveys have uncovered some very unfavourable practices, I know of some that were discovered in NHS hospitals.

nope

but it is not secret if you have a look round

a lot came out in the 1995-1998 period.

What was happening became undeniable once statistics were available.

If you know that e.g. Geriatrics is a very unpopular specialisation for docs and nurses; while Cardiac and Theatre are very prestigious, bear this in mind if you ever visit a hospital and see if you can still detect a pattern in the people who end up getting the prestigious and the non-prestigious jobs.

Isn't Professor Sir Magdi Jacoub one of the World's most eminent heart surgeons ... Is he ethnic group White British?

Are you suggesting that one white man in a bad job shows that all bad jobs go to white men?

Or that if all the soldiers in the Guards outside Buckingham Palace are black, that shows that all UK soldiers are black?

The one that annoys me is when they ask what newspaper do you read ..as if if give you some sort of social standing.

'BNP Today' always does the trick!
