Last year, I went on hols to Menorca. Getting onto the plane, I picked up one of the free papers they give out - Metro, if I recall.
A story in it took my eye, about how HMRC staff get away with murder re: expenses claims. The article was written by a leading firm of accountants, and was filled with "£6 for lunch without receipt", "£14 for food if out all day, without receipt", "£100 hotel stay, again without receipt", "sharing car out of office, yet both claiming 40p / mile", etc, etc.
A couple of weeks later, I drove a mate (HMRC employee - "I work in the IT department - I don't do tax!") to a wedding weekend in Gretna.
I ribbed him about getting the trip for free, seeing as he could claim for god-knows-what without receipts.
"It makes sense," he said. "It wastes a lot of money, having to keep and administer receipts, you know."
"Just like my company "wastes" a lot of money, having to keep receipts to satisfy you buggers!"
What's good for the goose etc etc.....
