Extortionate quotes for replacement boiler........

Just out of curiosity how would the BG engineer actually come to such a price, I mean what's the labour charges per hour? etc! how much would a boiler cost to a multi national company? I'm sure they'd be getting them at a reduced price Hum!

I don't think a customer has any right to that information, try asking a bank how they arrive at the fee they do for a service, they will simply tell you where to go....politely.

@ Gasman77: kicked into touch, yes means didn't accept the quote, when I asked them to break it down for me or explain it so I understood, they looked at me like I'd asked some forbidden question, one fitter just walked out on me not a word said. The guy I accepted took the trouble to explain it and it only took half hour, he was polite and thorough. I liked his attitude he was open to suggestions and explained why it wasn't a good idea if I made a suggestion or said I'm sure we can do that, he had an excellent manner to me, he is a tradesman. You can be the best fitter in the world but there is no excuse for being rude to a customer.

The bad attitude people like the guy that just walked off, was just plain ignorant, why would I want to deal with that? up until that point he'd all but got the job and I just wanted to make sure he understood what I wanted and that it was accommodated in the quote because I couldn't see it listed, I wouldn't call that unreasonable. As it was fate helped me because the next guy was the guy that's got the job.

I think if banks actually DID supply that info the world wouldn't be in the recession it's in now? its exactly that attitude that kills business

You'll find the slump was caused as a result of banks being too agreeable and not conservative enough.

I voluteer to fit my own, greenstar 30 HE, with all materials, flue plus optimiser compensator, for £1,200.
it will take two days, which includes all strip out of old kit.

@ tibbot I think agreeable is the wrong word, Greedy is more like it, it's the people that should have been more conservative unfortunately lending was abundant and common-sense wasn't.
I actually told my bank to reduce my card allowance, £15,000 on a credit card, stupidity or what, Like I'm going to spend that much using a card sheeeez!

Frog.
So step dad and his son or cousin as you put are in trade do they not live around your way and recommend someone as we all can if we are too busy. Or tell you that BG are far too dear for you
Not been left with a printed quote that has a complete breakdown of all the prices of each little bit etc etc, Very strange as they are done there and then during the visit and not posted or dropped off later

As a matter of interest, the breakdown on a quote I got recently from BG included £45 a metre for changing a 15 mm pipe to 22mm, approx ten meters required =£450. Seems rather a lot for changing a length of pipe, even if they do have to lift a couple of floorboards.
Is this about normal?

the guy im doing my gas safe with charged £1300 all in last week supply and fit a pro 29 including changing 12m of 15mm gas pipe to 22 and an extra rad we had it done in 3 hours

Hi Namsag thanks for the reply

My Step dad recommended his son (as my step dad who used to be married to my auntie (my mothers sister) before she died 10 years ago of a brain tumour and is now with my mother is off to europe on hols for 3 months) his son who is also my cousin (see above) has said he will do the job for me when he gets the time (see previous posts about being snowed under with work). They both agree that the price is way off the ball park.

The BG Man lives local and will drop the quote off either tonight or in the morning (This after spending over 2 hours in my house and having spent 3 minutes of that looking at the bolier and another 30 seconds checking the electrics with his meter thing - the rest of the time he spent telling us about his pay review meetings (and about the extra 2k a year they got if they hit target) and the 25 years he did on the tools)

And I wonder why the price tag was in at £3.5K
