Yep - face to face, we can ask for a better explanation what has just been said, and the intonation, often provides extra clues anyway.
What really annoys, is people who totally misunderstand the true meaning of words, and misuse them - Del Boy style, with his 'French'.
Last night, I was watching an old Doc Martin, where a 'too clever' school boy was doing work experience with the Doc. The lad misused 'Stat', which he intended to mean 'immediately'. Stat was suggested to be short for statin - the Latin for to keep still, calm down. The error wasn't corrected.

But, "stat" meaning "immediately" is derived from the Latin "statim" meaning "immediately"
It was suggested to be statin.
Stat could be short for thermostat !
Often the spoken word can have more to clarify it than the written word.
But a word only means what you intend it to mean when you want it to mean it anyway.

If you meant what do I mean by my statement then it is a reference to the Alice In Wonderland story.
Such as - if I choose to use a word then that word (or phrase) means exactly what I intended it to mean and nothing more nor nothing less.
People of speak in terms of what they mean.
A word or phrase might have one usual meaning and also one more technical meaning and also one more legal meaning and possibly a whole host of other possible meanings too.
We ourselves can encounter problems when discussing the words "Live", "Spur" and "Ringmain" even with fellow Electricians.
No wonder confusion can occur!

That would not happen if everyone used the correct terms.
Germany and italy have unpolarised plugs with an earth connection.
French plugs are physically polarised, but my understanding is that in practice the countries that use them are not consistent on polarity.
Agreed, but in real life that does not happen.
People tend to be humans and that begins to beggar everything up!
Anyway if a Cowboy Electrician refers to a "Spur" as something he wears near the heel of his foot then we are beggared again, we can not ever win!
